No more great deals on used kids clothes....

I just learned about this last night, and to say I'm mildly irritated would be an understatement. The government has passed legislation that goes into effect on Feb 10th....that requires ALL products sold for children to be tested for lead. This law is RETROACTIVE on all products, even clothing and books.

I'm a nut for a deal. I love thrift stores and yard sales. BUT, this legislation will probably eliminate the reselling of children's clothes because every item would have to be certified to be lead free. This will put thrift stores, small business and ebay/etsy sellers out of business.

AND...this burns my buttons....it will be ILLEGAL for me to GIVE hand-me-downs to friends/family!! WHAT?!?!?

Check out this post for more information. I'm writing letters and making phone calls this week. By the way...this is a federal law so it will take effect for EVERY state. Ugh.

I realize that lead is dangerous when kids put things in their mouths. My kids eat their food, not their clothes. It's probably more dangerous to take them to Walmart where we have to walk through the employee's smoke break just outside the front door!!

Ok, so I had not heard about this and I was pretty outraged when I read your post. Today I looked on snopes.com & found out that the govt just passed a clarification that sellers of used children's items will not have to certify items as lead free. Whew! My kids were going to have to 'go native' otherwise. . . a pretty cold idea in Wisconsin :o)
